Pet Sitters International’s Professional Pet Sitter Certification

June 17, 2025

In the ever-expanding world of pet care, trust and professionalism are paramount. Today, the credentials of a pet sitter matter more than ever, separating us from hobby pet sitters and side-gig workers. That’s why I recently decided to pursue Pet Sitters International’s Pet Sitter Certification. Their Certified Professional Pet Sitter® program brings together the top professionals in our industry. And, I’m proud to report that I passed the test and am officially a CPPS!

Pet Sitters International’s Professional Pet Sitter CertificationAbout Pet Sitters International (PSI)

Founded in 1994 by industry pioneer Patti J. Moran, Pet Sitters International has grown into the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters and dog walkers, representing over 4,000 businesses across the U.S., Canada, and more than a dozen other countries.

PSI’s mission is to promote excellence in pet sitting through education, resources, and advocacy. Over the past three decades, PSI has played a pivotal role in shaping the industry, offering business resources, insurance options, networking opportunities, and educational programs that help pet sitters build reputable, thriving businesses. I attended the PSI Pet Sitter World conference in Niagara Falls last year and wrote about my experience in this blog.

What the CPPS Certification Entails What the CPPS Certification Entails

The CPPS-Certified Professional Pet Sitter® designation is the pet sitting industry’s only knowledge-assessed certification exam specifically for professional pet sitters. Unlike many certifications that require completion of a specific course, the CPPS exam tests a candidate’s mastery of a broad, established body of knowledge essential for professional pet sitting. This includes cat and dog care, health, safety, emergency planning, business practices, and ethics. You can check out the detailed CPPS exam study objectives here.

What the CPPS Certification Entails - CredentialsTo earn the CPPS credential, candidates must:

  • Pass a rigorous, knowledge-based exam designed by PSI’s founder and staff, ensuring we possess the skills and expertise necessary for excellence in pet care
  • Agree to adhere to PSI’s Recommended Quality Standards and Code of Conduct & Ethics, demonstrating a commitment to ethical business practices and client trust
  • Complete a minimum of thirty (30) continuing education hours every three years to maintain the designation, ensuring we stay up-to-date on the latest in pet care and business best practices

This certification is federally trademarked, underscoring its status as a unique and prestigious achievement in the industry.

Why the CPPS Credential MattersWhy the CPPS Credential Matters Camea Allen

In a largely unregulated industry, the CPPS certification is a clear differentiator between hobbyists and true professionals. The test is not easy, and despite decades of pet care experience, I was nervous going in.

Here’s why it’s so significant:

Demonstrates My Competency

Passing the CPPS exam proves a sitter’s comprehensive knowledge and readiness to handle a wide variety of pet care situations.

Highlights My Commitment to Excellence

The certification process and ongoing education requirements demonstrate a commitment to upholding the highest standards in pet care.

Establishes My Credibility

Certified sitters can display the CPPS logo, enhancing their credibility, attracting discerning clients who value professionalism, and earning respect from colleagues and business partners.

Increases Consumer Confidence

Pet owners can trust that a CPPS-certified sitter is not only skilled but also committed to ethical conduct and continual learning.

Pet Sitters International’s Professional Pet Sitter Certification

Choosing a CPPS-Certified Professional Pet Sitter® means entrusting your pets to someone who has proven their expertise, ethics, and commitment to ongoing education.
