When pet parents are planning travel or long workdays, one of the biggest decisions they face is what to do with their pet. Boarding facilities and doggie daycares can seem convenient, but for most pets, remaining in their own home with professional care is actually the healthier, lower-stress choice. A key reason is the 3-3-3 rule, a rule often cited by canine behavior professionals and veterinarians. Using the 3-3-3 rule and from personal experience, I have come to believe that in-home pet care beats boarding and daycare. Here’s why!
What Is the 3-3-3 Rule?
The 3-3-3 rule is commonly used by animal behaviorists and rescue organizations to describe how pets adjust to new environments:
- First 3 days: Pets may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or shut down. It takes at least three days before they can decompress.
- First 3 weeks: They begin to learn routines but may still feel uncertain, especially if they continue to experience changes in the environment.
- First 3 months: They finally start to feel secure and fully adjusted and their new life.
While the rule is often discussed in adoption scenarios, the underlying principle applies anytime a pet is moved into a new environment, including boarding kennels or doggie daycare.
Why Does the 3-3-3 Rule Matter?
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), environmental changes can trigger stress responses, including appetite loss, gastrointestinal upset, pacing, vocalization, or withdrawal. Even confident pets can struggle when their routines, smells, and social expectations suddenly change. They further explain the 3-3-3 rule here.
Environmental changes can trigger stress because unfamiliar places can send our pets into a fight-or-flight or freeze response, especially cats who are not accustomed to leaving their home. Dogs tend to adjust to change better than cats because they go for walks and leave home more often. That said, the older they get, the less dogs enjoy going too far from home.
Why Familiar Environments Reduce Stress
Again, pets rely heavily on routine, scent, and territory to feel safe. Their home is where they know when meals happen, where they sleep, and what noises are normal. Boarding facilities, no matter how clean or well-run, introduce unfamiliar dogs, people, sounds, and schedules all at once.
Sudden environmental changes can elevate cortisol (the stress hormone) in dogs, which may suppress the immune system and increase susceptibility to illness. Cats, in particular, tend to struggle with relocation. Many cats exhibit stress-related behaviors, such as hiding, litter box avoidance, or refusal to eat, when removed from their home territory.
How In-Home Pet Sitting Supports Emotional Health
In-home pet sitting works with a pet’s natural need for stability rather than against it. By staying home, pets can:
- Maintain their normal feeding and medication schedules
- Sleep in familiar spaces
- Avoid exposure to unfamiliar animals and contagious illnesses
- Experience less disruption to behavior, diet, and digestion
Of course, pet care providers also notice subtle changes more easily when pets are in their usual environment, allowing for faster communication with pet parents if something seems off. It’s hard for daycare and boarding facility workers to notice when the pet’s behavior changes, especially when they don’t know the pet well and may be caring for dozens at once. That’s why establishing an ongoing relationship with a pet care company like ours pays off in the long run!
In-Home Pet Care Beats Boarding and Daycare
While boarding and daycare may work for some pets, many thrive best at home, especially young puppies and kittens, seniors, shy pets, cats, and animals with medical needs. The 3-3-3 rule reminds us that environmental changes like a week spent at boarding, a sporadic trip to dog daycare, and a move, are not neutral events; they affect behavior, stress levels, and overall well-being.
At Hearts at Home Pet Sitting, in-home care isn’t just convenient; it’s designed to support pets emotionally, physically, and behaviorally, right where they feel safest!
