Trick-or-Treating with Dogs
One of the things I love most about living in Yorktown is how family and pet-friendly we tend to be in this area. Over the years, I've noticed more families including their pets in Halloween festivities, for example. Trick-or-treating is not just for kids; it can be a fun experience for dogs, too! If you plan to take your furry friend along for the Halloween festivities this year, here are 5 top tips for trick-or-treating with dogs. Read our latest blog for additional pet safety tips.
1. Choose the Right Costume
Dressing your dog in a costume can add to the fun, but it’s crucial to select one that is comfortable and safe.
Avoid costumes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed. Make sure the costume fits well and doesn’t restrict movement or breathing. Choose lightweight materials, especially if your dog isn’t accustomed to wearing clothing. Consider options like a simple bandana or a themed collar if your dog is sensitive to costumes.
2. Stay Visible and Safe
As you stroll through neighborhoods, visibility is key. Equip your dog with reflective gear or a light-up collar to ensure they can be seen by others, especially during dusk.
Carry a flashlight and/or glow sticks to illuminate your path and help others see you. This is particularly important in areas where there may be traffic or large crowds.
3. Keep Treats Out of Reach
While it’s tempting to share Halloween treats with your pup, many candies are toxic to dogs, particularly chocolate and sugar-free candies that are sweetened with xylitol.
During trick-or-treating hours, keep candy bowls out of reach and ensure your dog doesn’t sneak any goodies from visitors. Instead, bring along some dog-friendly treats to reward your pup for being a good sport throughout the evening.
Once home, store all of your Halloween goodies away from your dog and other pets.
4. Know Your Route & Plan Ahead
Before heading out, familiarize yourself with the trick-or-treating route in Yorktown or its environs.
Check for any designated trick-or-treat maps that highlight participating locations so you can plan your stops accordingly. This will help you avoid overly crowded areas and ensure a more relaxed experience for both you and your dog.

5. Monitor Your Dog’s Comfort Level
Not all dogs enjoy the hustle and bustle of Halloween festivities. Pay attention to your dog's behavior; if they seem anxious or overwhelmed, it might be best to remove costumes and/or cut the outing short. Look for signs of stress such as excessive barking, cowering, or trying to hide.
If necessary, consider leaving your dog at home where they can feel safe while you enjoy the evening with family or friends. Bring all pets indoors and keep them restrained, create a safe, quiet space for them, and disconnect your doorbell if you think it might stress out your pets to hear it repeatedly.
Trick-or-treating with dogs in Yorktown and other Hampton Roads areas can be a delightful experience when approached thoughtfully. By choosing appropriate costumes, ensuring visibility, keeping harmful treats away, planning your route, and monitoring your dog's comfort level, you can create lasting memories during this festive season.
