Protecting Your Home and Yourself While Traveling or Walking Your Dog

March 6, 2026

At Hearts at Home Pet Sitting, serving Yorktown, Poquoson, Newport News, and Hampton, Virginia, we believe good in-home pet care is based on thoughtful attention to personal safety, home security, and privacy. Whether you’re heading out of town or simply taking your dog for a neighborhood walk, taking precautions is key. Protecting your home and yourself while traveling or walking your dog is easy; it just takes some intention and common sense. Let’s discuss!

Caméa Allen, Hearts at Home Pet Sitting OwnerContinuing Education in Home Safety and Situational Awareness

Professional pet care also means investing in ongoing education. I recently attended the Texas Pet Sitters Conference. Before the official conference started, I participated in an optional self-defense workshop focused on the realities pet sitters can encounter while on-the-job.

The training covered practical ways to stay safe while entering and leaving clients’ homes, situational awareness during dog walks, and what to do if someone attempts to grab or confront you. Just as importantly, the workshop emphasized prevention, like recognizing potential risks early and positioning yourself in ways that reduce vulnerability.

While these situations are thankfully rare in Hampton Roads, preparation and awareness help professionals like us respond calmly and confidently if something unexpected occurs. I will be sharing much of what I learned during the workshop with our team because I believe we can never be too careful, or too prepared.

1) Protect Your Travel Plans To Avoid Potential Risk

One of the easiest ways to unintentionally advertise that your home is empty is through social media. While sharing vacation photos is fun, posting about travel plans in real time can make your home appear unoccupied.

Instead, consider:

  • Posting photos after you return home
  • Avoiding public posts that mention exact travel dates or locations
  • Asking trusted neighbors or friends to keep an eye on the property

We’ll make your home appear occupied by bringing in mail, packages, and newspapers, altering lights and blinds, and keeping an eye on things while you’re away.

2) Ensure Your Privacy and Security When Choosing Pet Care Providers

Protecting our clients’ privacy is one of our top priorities. We never share personal details about our clients, their homes, or their schedules publicly, whether it’s with your neighbors or online. While we love sharing moments from our days with pets on social media, we are careful about what information accompanies those posts.

That’s why hiring a professional pet sitter like us is key to ensuring safety and security. When your pet care provider maintains discretion and understands the importance of your privacy, as we do, your home and pets remain private and secure, especially while you’re traveling. When you hire a hobby pet sitter, friend, or neighbor, they may unintentionally share delicate information that could put you at risk.

Dog walks are a wonderful way to exercise and explore the neighborhood, but staying aware of your surroundings is always important.

When walking your dog, try to:

  • Keep your phone accessible, but avoid becoming distracted by it
  • Pay attention to unfamiliar people, vehicles, or situations around you
  • Walk in well-lit, populated areas whenever possible
  • Only wear one headphone or keep music and podcast volume lower than usual while you walk
  • Wear reflective gear or accessories to ensure you’re visible to drivers and bikers
  • Trust your instincts and change direction if something feels off

Dogs can sometimes pick up on unusual situations before we do, so stay in tune with your dog(s) during walks. That said, your situational awareness remains one of the most effective safety tools, so avoid distractions and never take safety for granted.

Safety, privacy, and professionalism go hand in hand. When you leave your pets in the care of a professional sitter, you’re trusting someone not only to provide loving care but also to treat your home and personal information with respect.

At Hearts at Home Pet Sitting, we take that responsibility very seriously. By prioritizing awareness, discretion, and continuing education, we work to ensure that both pets and their families can feel secure. As a former military spouse, I understand how delicate private information is and how dangerous it can be when left in the wrong hands. From thoroughly vetting our employees to maintaining consistent oversight and providing ongoing training, my focus is always on safety and security through prevention.
