Emergencies can happen when you least expect them, and our professional sitters are trained to take swift, thoughtful action. Whether it’s sudden illness, injury, or severe weather, we follow structured safety protocols to protect every pet and home under our care. Here are the ways in which Hearts at Home Pet Sitting handles pet emergencies with care. When you entrust Hearts at Home Pet Sitting with your pets, you’re not just hiring a service; you’re choosing a team dedicated to your pets’ safety, comfort, and well-being!
Responding to Veterinary Emergencies
Recently, we discovered that a dog in our care had a significant amount of blood in his stool. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, we immediately contacted the pet’s family while preparing to transport the dog to his veterinarian. Because every minute can make a difference in these situations, we, together with the pet parents, took decisive steps to ensure he received prompt medical attention.
We also cleaned up the mess, which we covered in the photos to prevent grossing you out!. Cleaning up ensures our clients, and their pet, once released from the vet, would return to a home free of messes and odors. It also prevents damage of floors, floor boards, etc.
Emergency transport and clean-up are a critical part of our service offerings and one that gives pet parents invaluable peace of mind, especially when far away from home.
Assessing Potential Emergencies
Our emergency response is precise yet compassionate. If a pet shows concerning symptoms such as blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy, confusion, or signs of injury, including limping, panting, or painful whining, we first assess the situation to ensure their immediate safety. We may search the house for signs the pet ingested a toxin, check their paws for signs of trauma, or look around for a pet mess or accident.
Next, we contact the pet parent and, if necessary, the veterinarian in their pet profile. When urgent action is required, we transport the pet to the nearest veterinary clinic for evaluation and treatment. If the animal needs significant intervention, we usually choose the closest emergency veterinary clinic with the equipment needed to provide critical care. If the situation can be handled by the family’s usual veterinary clinic and can be seen during their office hours, we will transport them there.
We always work together with the family, emergency contacts (if we can’t reach the pet’s guardians), and veterinarians to ensure that we don’t waste valuable time while also meeting the pet’s needs and honoring their families’ wishes.
Clear Communication & Safety
Transparency is at the heart of what we do. During any emergency, our clients are never left wondering what’s happening. We stay in constant contact through calls or messages, providing updates on what has occurred, what actions are being taken, and how their pet is doing. As stated above, if we are unable to reach the pet owner immediately, we contact the emergency contact as listed in the client profile to ensure timely decisions can be made on the pet’s behalf.
During transport, we ensure your pet is safe in the vehicle and call our management team or other sitters for support if needed. If the pet cannot be transported, we will work with you to arrange a mobile vet visit to ensure your pet receives the care he or she needs.
Finally, we also make every effort to complete visits for all other pets in the home, keeping their routines as normal and reassuring as possible. For clients traveling out of town, we understand how stressful it can be to face unexpected news about a beloved pet. Our goal is to handle everything calmly and competently so guardians know their furry family members are in capable, caring hands, no matter what happens in their absence.
Safety Protocols for Weather and Disasters
In addition to medical emergencies, our team prepares for weather-related risks, including hurricanes, severe storms, flooding, freezes, and extreme heat. If unsafe conditions make it impossible to reach your home, we immediately notify you or your designated emergency contact. We strongly recommend that every client have an evacuation plan in place for their entire pet family in the event of a disaster.
