Fall is upon us and we're loving the crisper mornings, cooler dog walks, and Halloween decor. As temps drop and the weather changes, however, we're starting to think about ways to prepare our pets for colder weather. The following is our list of essential tips for a pet-friendly fall season. Enjoy while sipping a pumpkin spice latte!
Essential Pet Grooming Tips for Fall
Properly grooming our pets is a great way to ensure our pet's health and comfort during the changing seasons. For long-haired dogs, falling leaves can become an uncomfortable accessory on walks. For this reason, trimming legs and faces is a great plan for fall.
Both cats' and dogs' teeth need to be cleaned regularly. Fall is a great time to schedule a teeth cleaning and get back into the habit of brushing your pets' teeth. If you plan to have your pet's teeth checked by a veterinarian annually during the same season, it's easier to remember when they are due.
Finally, keeping nails trimmed will protect dogs from nail injury when out and about. While it's fun to watch dogs run into leaf piles, it's best to keep them on leash when out in unfamiliar areas. Allowing a dog to run into a leaf pile can be hazardous if you're not familiar with the area or what's underneath. Cats too benefit from trimmed nails, as does your furniture.
Essential Fall Exercise Tips for Fall
Fall is a great time to get back into a daily exercise routine with our pets. Whether it be planning a daily walk around the neighborhood or a vigorous play session with our cats each evening, pets benefit greatly from regular exercise and engagement with their humans.
Enriching our pets' lives doesn't take a lot of effort. As long as we know what they enjoy and make an effort to engage and exercise our pets at least once daily, we can greatly improve their lives, no matter the season.
On days when Mother Nature isn't on our side, remember that dogs can enjoy enriching activities indoors. Check out some great indoor enrichment ideas here.
Essential Pet Feeding Tips for Fall
As outdoor fall activities fade into winter snuggles on the couch, it's important to practice portion control - for both us and our pets!
Keeping in mind that our pets' portion sizes fall in line with their weight, food formulation, and activity levels, limiting treats and table scraps is key this time of year, especially when enjoying long weekends and holiday feasts.
As pet obesity rates rise, making the commitment to monitor our pets' weight with regular veterinary visits is a great way to prevent weight-related issues and illnesses down the line.
