Spring is springin'! It's time to dust off the sunblock and prepare for more time outdoors. These 3 pet-friendly spring events in Poquoson and Hampton, Virginia, promise to be a great time for the whole family. Since they are pet-friendly, these events welcome leashed dogs - and maybe backpack cats - but it's important to remember that not all pets enjoy crowds, loud music, and other animals.
As we always recommend, call ahead to ensure your backpack or stroller cat is welcome because, unfortunately, the term "pet-friendly" often refers only to dogs.
Peninsula Pups Spring Social & Easter Egg Hunt
The Peninsula Pups Spring Social & Easter Egg Hunt will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on April 27, 2025. Admission is free, but there is an $8 per dog fee to participate in the egg hunt.
Presented by Peninsula Pups Social Club and PETquoson, the event gives pups 10 minutes to sniff out eggs with dog treats in them. Participants are asked to bring a basket in which to collect the eggs.
Proceeds will benefit local animal rescues. The rain date is May 4th. Learn more here.
Paws for Pride <- We are Event Sponsors!
Paws for Pride celebrates the fourth year of its community pet expo at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home and Memorial Park. This pet-friendly event features a variety of local vendors, music, pet foster and adoptions, and a pet costume contest. Hosted by Parkland Pride, avid supporters of Peninsula SPCA and other Hampton Roads animal welfare organizations, this event is all about the paws.
Hearts at Home Pet Sitting, along with over a dozen other pet-specific area businesses, will join to support the cause and engage with the public during the event, which is scheduled for May 10, 2025, from 4 PM to 9 PM. We hope you'll stop by and greet us while enjoying the festivities!
Pup Days of Summer Fest
We don't know just how steamy Sunday, June 8th, from 12 to 5 PM will be, but it will likely feel like summer! Proceeds from Pup Days of Summer Fest will benefit the Dooney Sullivan Angel Fund, a fund that assists pet parents who cannot cover the expenses required to support their pet during a medical crisis.
There will be vendors, food trucks, raffles, prizes, and more. The rain date is Sunday, June 22nd. You can learn more about the event here.
The Benefits of Attending Local Pet-Friendly Events
I enjoy sharing these events because I want to see them succeed! So often, we think these events are going to be too crowded or not worth the visit, but the reality is that participating in local events has many benefits.
First, by bringing your well-behaved, socialized pets to public events like these, you help them refine their skills around strangers, in crowds, etc. Attending pet-friendly events regularly helps pets become accustomed to being outside the home. They enjoy using their sense, checking in with other dogs, and getting treats and pets from other pet lovers like you. Of course, after the event, it's always nice to head home and crash, but these events allow for excellent enrichment opportunities for the pets that enjoy them.
Second, these events are often the largest fundraiser that these organizations have each year. They count on the registration fees and donations to run their rescues, cover veterinary costs, etc. It's important to support these events and the organizations that they benefit because they do so much for our community!
